Here at HTPCBuild.com, we are obsessed with home theatre PCs and more importantly we are very cost concious. As a result, we have a extremely oversized soft spot in our hearts for the Raspberry Pi Model B. $35 for a HTPC?! Yes please! However, not all Raspberry Pi enthusiast seek to turn a Model B into a HTPC. Others might have more out of the box ideas, such as a Model B that can turn on your amp, switch your amp to the correct input source, or maybe even dim or turn off lighting in your home theatre.

Adafruit aims to help all Raspberry Pi enthusiasts create out of the box applications for our Raspberry Pis. They recently announced the launch of a Prototyping Pi Plate kit, which Raspberry Pi’s PCB plate. This removable plate kit has breadboard style and perfboard style prototyping area as well as GPIO/I2C/SPI and power pins broken out into 0.1″ strips. There is even a SOIC surface mount chip breakout area! To top it all off the plate can stack on one another for added expandability.

The Adafruit Prototyping Pi Plate kit, turns the Raspberry Pi into a perfect DIY system. Being that the Raspberry Pi will soon be extremely accessible and is very powerful, the Adafruit Plate Kit should make the Raspberry Pi the system of choice for all home brewed computer embedded DIY projects.

Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi with Pi Plate Kit. I’d love to try my hand at creating a Model B that can automatically turn my amp on, switch inputs, and dim the lights when I launch my XBMC.
