D-Link Announces release of DSM-310 MOVIENITE!
D-Link DSM-310
D-Link announced today that it has launched a streaming media player, the DSM 3-10. The DSM-310 has been designed to compete against products such as the Apple TV and the Roku. The unit comes with app support for: VUDU, Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, and the ability to view mydlink-enabled network cameras. There also appears to be apps available for Android or IPhone users. Much like its competitors the DSM-310 acts as bridge between online content and your TV.
Specifications on the unit indicate it is capable of 1080p playback with 5.1 audio support via HDMI, 480i playback with stereo support via A/V connectors and support for both 10/100 ethernet and wireless n mode. There is no mention of the DSM-310’s ability to playback via DLNA or access storage devices over your network.
Considering the application support, protocol support and list price of $59.99 this unit seems like a dumbed down version Roku or Apple TV. In my opinion, a product targeting the most basic HTPC users. However, given the units ability to play back 1080p content there must be some capable hardware. The DSM-310 might be a good candidate for further software/firmware modification to add support for DLNA streaming, NAS Streaming, and other third party applications. We’ll need to wait and see how the HTPC community reacts to D-Links DSM-310.
It also appears the DSM-310 is already available via Walmart.com for $48.00.
